About Around Notes
Around Notes is an AI-powered inpatient documentation platform built by a hospitalist, for hospitalists — and the inpatient specialists, surgeons, residents, nurse practitioners, and physician assistants working alongside them. We're a California-based company, founded and operated in the United States.
We're not a startup born in a boardroom. We're not backed by venture capital or beholden to investors chasing the next funding round. We're a small, focused team building a product that solves a real clinical problem — because our founder lives it every day.
Where This Came From
Dr. Micheal Massoud is a practicing hospitalist and the founder and CEO of Spyglass Systems LLC, a California company registered in Yolo County. He didn't start Around Notes to build a company — he started it because he was tired of finishing a long day of rounding only to face a stack of notes still waiting to be written.
EMRs were designed for billing, not for clinicians. Documentation became a burden layered on top of an already demanding job. Around Notes came from that frustration: a better way to turn chart context and clinical thinking into a complete, paste-ready note — faster, cleaner, and with a built-in second pass to catch what tired eyes miss.
The concept took shape in 2024. By March 2025, Micheal hired the first developer. Today, a team of four continues to build and improve the platform — not as a side project, but as a focused effort to bring genuinely useful tools to inpatient medicine.
What We Believe
We believe the best medical AI tools come from people who understand the clinical environment — the nonlinear reality of rounding, the pressure of a full list, the friction of a messy inherited chart. We're not trying to replace clinical judgment. We're trying to remove the mechanical burden that gets in the way of it.
We also believe that privacy isn't a checkbox. It's a design principle.
As a physician-founded company, HIPAA compliance and patient data protection were built into the architecture from day one — not added later as an afterthought. Here's what that means in practice:
- We do not sell user data. Ever.
- We do not train AI models on patient data or PHI.
- All of our AI partners operate under a zero data retention policy with us.
- Users control their own note retention — with configurable deletion policies ranging from 7 to 180 days.
- Our platform is HIPAA-compliant and SOC 2 certified.
